Hi. Can someone tell me why Smith Machines are not recommended? My gym doesn't have a squat rack (although it has normal barbell's, as well as an Olympic bar), however I cannot get the higher weights over my head and onto my shoulders using the barbells to do squats, but I can do higher weights on the Smith Machine. Thank you.

For a home gym where I'll usually be working out by myself with no one home. I'm not looking to set any world records for lifting and I'm a tall thin guy so it wouldn't be crazy weight. I'd be using it to get core/lower body strength and I'll probably get a sled later for more targeted leg workouts. My current notions are as follows: Smith machine - Pros: Best safety and could ...

Hi - The gym I go to isn't really cut out for serious freeweight lifting, we don't have an olympic bar, squat rack or anything like that. The only thing suitable to use is the smith machine which I am currently using for bench, squats and deadlifts. I know this isn't ideal, but changing gyms isn't really an option as I don't live in a large town and I workout on my lunchtimes from work. ...

Has anyone owned either of these two machines? I am going to buy 1 and would like to know which would be better. I can get the Powertec machine for $700 w. 200lbs of wt. The Nautilus squat rack machine would be $450 w. 205 lbs. wt. Any suggestions?
