I've got a concrete front stoop that had a wrought iron railing embedded in the concrete. This is a one piece solid iron railing (not hollow ). I see wrought iron original to a house as part of its bones, the way molding is in a Victorian. The only time wrought iron annoys me (though I still love the look) is when it's exposed to the elements and I have to paint it every year.

No railing is worth much as scrap, they just don't weigh that much. You'll get a lot more out of it selling it to someone that wants another railing. Even rusty rails clean up nicely is someone wants to put the effort into it, like sandblasting, priming, and painting. I suspect your metal rail might be more durable than any wood rail will be.
