Looking ahead to next year - I didn't get any strawberries off my plants this year because (I suspect) the ground squirrels beat me to them all. I have always tied aluminum pans on stakes in my berries to discourage the birds and it has worked. But the stupid little ground squirrels seem to be oblivious to that. Will a small-mesh chicken wire fence keep them out, or will they simply burrow ...

I was out in the yard and driveway a while ago and the squirrels have been working overtime on the acorns and hickory nuts. I have a huge Burr Oak and the ground is full of acorn shells where the squirrels have been cutting them. Haven't seen and wooly bear caterpillars yet to see what they are predicting for winter. I have some leaves turning and coming down, but that's from being dry ...

the squirrels love the bird feeder, they climb up it and knock some of the seeds out, then the other birds eat some of it off the ground and my cats sit there and watch them but they never chase them. I feed the squirrels nuts when they knock on the door and then the blue jays come and steal the nuts. Now the striped skunk comes with its family and they eat the ...

Spotty acorn production could help deer and turkey hunters in some areas. JEFFERSON CITY–Missouri’s acorn-counters have filed their reports, and the news could play a key role in deer and turkey hunters’ strategies this fall. Acorn-counters? That’s right. The Missouri Department of Conservation has a dedicated cadre of employees and volunteers who take to the woods each fall to ...

I have bought a squirrel proof nutfeeder, seed dispenser and suet feeder that hang from the tree and are doing a grand job. My problem is that the "squirrel proof" ground feeder that supplies food to birds such ...

I had a great day today with my 4 year old son and 11 year old daughter. We took the entire day and went squirrel hunting as a means to introduce both of them to hunting. They both know Dad is a hunter, and have been repeatedly asking me to take them. We spent the day in the woods, bagged 5 very nice squirrels, all clean one shot kills with my old Marlin Model 60 .22 rifle. Both kids loved ...
