I have a question regarding range of motion and proper form.... while doing chest, back and shoulder exercises whats the proper range of motion. i was told once by a trainer that the proper range is always working on basis of 90 degrees for all press exersizes....that it is bad for your shoulders and elbows going for more that 90 degrees.... but then for example while benching, many go ...

Im confused....How can you do a shoulder press with a 90 degree press? And as far as benching is concerned, if you want optimum muscle stimulation then bringing the weight down as far as possible, i.e almost touching your chest would stretch the muscle more and hence would get more results. As long as your not swinging or jolting during the motion, I don't know how these exercises can damage the ...

exaclty how i said, on a 90 degree format.....i too would think that more of a stretch gets more of a workout, and its harder...but they said that do everything keeping in mind bending your arms up too 90 degrees.... for example doing military press. well you should use a wide grip, becuase i narrow grip is bad for your shoulders, and the wide grip so that when you reach a 90 degree angle ...

Omargue - lemme illustrate with numbers. I do complete motion bench press with 65+15=80 kg for 12 reps. When I do the half motion stuff I can usually do upto 90-95 kg. The reasons are: 1. simply because of less range of motion you are expending less energy 2. the lower half of the motion is precisely the range where your muscles are weakest.
