I signed up to the local UNI gym last night (after going, I can't believe I've even been bothering with the gym at home) with the intention of basically following the Rippetoe's regime, can't remember exactly what it was but it went ABA BAB and involved squats and deadlifts on the first day (A). Form is very important with squats. If you feel the weight is too light to get a good workout but adding weight makes your form breakdown, then do a couple sets of leg press afterwards. Once your squat catches up ditch the leg press.

Ditch the leg press now and learn to squat with very little to no weight.

While his advice isnt bad from his point of view, I would say that as long as you learn proper form and start out light i would say you can start squatting. He probably was just suggesting leg presses out for a beginner since injurys can occur to people not lifting right to start out.
