So I'm back from my holiday trip and am in a state of paralysis or ennui, or both. First, my place needs cleaning, which I planned to do this morning, but instead I read the New York Times cover to cover (or byte to byte since it was online) and watched all the online videos about Africa and China, while, of course, intermittently checking new postings on the fora. Now I am posting ...

One of my students in a relatively small class has been arrested and charged with rape. The alleged event took place on university property. I emailed the other students mostly just to let them know and to open the door for any students who are this kid's friends to come to me for accommodations. What would you do?

Remember my roasted sinner? The plagiarist who ended up getting reported and got a failing grade on the assignment? OK, so it was a first offense. No judicial consequences. We had our encounter session, replete with tears and snot. We moved on. Since the incident, my fried spider has been a model student, always reading, always contributing, studying relentlessly and doing well on ...

Hi, I'm new. I'm a second-year grad student. I'm fairly confident that I am suffering from anxiety and depression (screening has indicated this, and I'm seeing a therapist this week to confirm it). Both are fairly mild, but it is interfering with my academic performance. I'm wondering if it is a good idea to talk to my professors about this. I'm afraid that, if they don't already...

We've done this before. You need to give an answer and a question in your post. The question refers to the answer given in the above posting, the answer is for the next poster's question. OK? Q: Does everyone understand? A: (for the next poster) I put it down here somewhere.

Fidel's Black Bean Soup Simmer 1 pound dried black beans in 12 cups water with 2 bay leaves for about 2 hours. Add 3 chopped green bell peppers 2 chopped sweet onions (large ones) 1 Tbsp ground cumin 2 Tbsp oregano (fresh preferred, but not necessary) 1.5 Tbsp sugar 2 tsp salt 2 Tbsp liquid smoke. Simmer another hour or so. Toppings: 2 avocados diced chunky, with 2 Tbsp lime juice. 1 red ...

This link came up in another thread, but I think it deserves its own topic. A tenured professor is at risk of losing his job (and is no longer allowed to supervise other scientists in his lab) because he will not take a 2 hour course on preventing sexual harassment. That just seems foolhardy. http://chronicle.com/jobs/blogs/onhiring/765

Today I'm preparing more applications. Those of you who followed my previous posts already know that I'm in an AHA field, but my work is also related to the study of religion. So I've applied thus far to about 40 positions and postdocs, and even gotten a few interviews. Each place has different requirements and that's fine. But once in a while I come across an application where the SC ...

Some of us were enjoying the positive atmosphere on the "How Many Applications" thread and thought a broader check-in thread might be useful. I would love to see this remain a zone of minimal snark, if possible, so that we could focus on trying to be supportive of each other's efforts on the market. Anyone on the market is welcome to share their experiences here, whether you are ABD or ...

I don't believe in these strict drunk driving laws. Sure, you may say, but I know someone who was killed by a drunk driver, but that's not really an argument. I mean, I know quite a few people who were killed by sober drivers. First, the BAC level for drunk driving is now at .08 across the country. No one is drunk at .08. What's that? Two beers? Three tops? I'm sorry, but that's a ...
